Poultry Shed Design and Ventilation for Indian Conditions
Orientation, roof height, ridge and side openings, and why ventilation is about removing moisture and ammonia — not only about cooling.
Shed design is a decision you live with for the life of the building. Getting orientation and ventilation right at construction costs little; correcting them afterwards is expensive and often only partially possible.
Orientation
In most of India, run the long axis east–west. This keeps direct sun off the long side walls through the hottest part of the day, so the birds are shaded while the prevailing breeze still crosses the shed. A north–south shed takes full sun on one long wall all afternoon.
- Leave at least 15–20 m between sheds so airflow into one is not the exhaust from another.
- Choose a site with natural drainage; standing water around a shed means damp litter inside it.
- Plant shade trees at a distance — enough to break the sun, not so close that they block the wind.

Width is the constraint people most often get wrong. Beyond about 10 m, natural cross ventilation cannot reach the middle of the shed, and the centre becomes a dead zone with damp litter and high ammonia regardless of how open the sides are.
What ventilation is actually for
Cooling is the obvious purpose, but in practice ventilation earns its keep by removing moisture and ammonia. Birds add a great deal of water to the air through respiration and droppings. If that moisture stays in the shed it lands in the litter, and wet litter produces ammonia and coccidiosis.
- If you can smell ammonia at bird level, it is already high enough to damage the respiratory lining and open the way to secondary infection.
- Condensation on the underside of the roof in the morning means moisture is not leaving.
- Caked litter around drinkers means air movement is insufficient there, whatever the thermometer says.
Managing summer
- Insulate or paint the roof. A reflective white roof coating measurably lowers shed temperature.
- Use foggers or sprinklers on the roof during peak heat, with adequate air movement — fogging in still air raises humidity and makes conditions worse.
- Hang curtains that can be lowered against driving rain and raised for airflow.
- Reduce stocking density in summer batches.
Managing the monsoon
- Overhangs and side curtains keep rain out of the litter; wet litter is the monsoon's main cost.
- Maintain drainage channels around the shed before the season, not during it.
- Store feed off the floor on pallets — humid conditions promote mould and aflatoxin.
- Stir and top up litter more frequently, and remove caked patches rather than covering them.

Reduce density further in hot weather. Stocking to the maximum in May is a false economy — the weight lost across the batch usually exceeds the value of the extra birds.
