Biosecurity for Small and Medium Poultry Farms

Most disease arrives on wheels, boots and crates. The practical measures that keep it out — none of which need a large budget.

Biosecurity is the cheapest intervention available to a poultry farm, and the most consistently neglected. Almost every serious outbreak is introduced by something that was carried onto the site — a vehicle, a pair of boots, a crate of birds, a bag of feed.

Three lines of defence

  1. Keep it off the farm. Control what crosses the boundary.
  2. Keep it out of the shed. Control what crosses from the farm yard into the birds' space.
  3. Keep it from spreading. If one shed breaks, stop it reaching the others.

At the boundary

  • Fence the site and use a single controlled entry point. Multiple informal entrances make everything else pointless.
  • Keep a visitor register. It is also how you trace a source after an outbreak.
  • Refuse entry to anyone who has been on another poultry farm within 48 hours. Traders and catchers are the highest-risk visitors precisely because they visit many farms.
  • Park delivery vehicles outside the production area. A wheel dip only works if it is deep enough, and if the disinfectant is changed — a tray of dilute muddy water disinfects nothing.
  • Take feed deliveries at the perimeter rather than driving the lorry between sheds.

At the shed door

  • Farm-only boots and overalls, changed at the entrance. Dedicated footwear per shed is better still.
  • A foot dip at every shed door, with disinfectant replaced on a schedule — organic matter inactivates most disinfectants quickly.
  • Hand washing or sanitiser at each entry. Simple and consistently effective.
  • Work in age order: youngest birds first, oldest last, never the reverse. Older flocks shed more pathogen.
  • Keep equipment shed-specific. Shared crates, shovels and egg trays move disease efficiently.
The most common breach is the bird catcher. Catching crews move between farms with their own crates and vehicles, often at night, and go directly into the shed. Insist on clean crates and farm-supplied boots, and treat catching day as your highest-risk window.

Wild birds, rodents and other animals

  • Net shed openings. Wild birds are a primary route for avian influenza and Newcastle disease.
  • Store feed in closed containers or a sealed room — open feed attracts both birds and rodents.
  • Run a continuous rodent programme. Rodents carry Salmonella and damage infrastructure.
  • Keep other livestock, dogs and cats out of the production area.
  • Clear spilled feed daily. It is the main attractant.

All-in, all-out

Single-age sites outperform multi-age sites on health, consistently. Continuous stocking means older birds constantly reinfecting younger ones, and no point at which the site can be properly cleaned. If you run one batch at a time, you get a real break:

  1. Remove all birds and all litter.
  2. Dry clean, then wash — organic matter blocks disinfectant, so cleaning must precede it.
  3. Disinfect, including drinker lines, which build biofilm that ordinary flushing will not remove.
  4. Rest the shed. Two weeks is a reasonable minimum; longer is better.
  5. Only then re-litter and pre-heat for the next batch.

Water

Water is an overlooked vector. Open tanks, unflushed lines and biofilm in nipple drinkers all carry bacteria. Test the water source periodically, cover storage tanks, and clean and sanitise drinker lines between batches rather than only when a problem appears.

Dead bird disposal

Handle mortality daily and dispose by deep burial, incineration or composting, well away from the sheds and any water source. Carcasses left near the production area attract scavengers and become a reservoir. Never sell or feed out dead birds.
